Using broadband to make calls 'can save money'

Using broadband to make calls 'can save money' One of the benefits of business broadband is being able to make phone calls over the internet, the British Computer Society (BCS) has stated.

Small businesses may invest in Voice over IP (VoIP) in an effort to slash communication costs as the economy slows down and the cost of energy goes up, according to BCS manager Adrian Walmsley.

VoIP converts voice signals from a telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet before converting it back to voice at the other end.

Mr Walmsley pointed out that VoIP call costs are "certainly cheaper" than conventional telephony.

"The economic downturn may encourage more SMEs to investigate VoIP," he remarked.

"My own company invested in VoIP technology long before the current downturn because of the additional functionality and flexibility it can provide."

According to VoIP.org.uk, VoIP makes more efficient use of available network bandwidth because the integration of voice and data "fills up" the data channels, thereby providing bandwidth consolidation.
