Wales to get domain name suffix?
Monday 30th June 2008, by Daniel King
As broadband customers get set to browse a set of new domain names, Wales could develop a stronger web presence with the .cym domain name.
It was recently revealed that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers had approved plans for new endings to websites, alongside the standards such as .com and .co.uk which are currently used.
The news has led to Plaid Cymru's Bethan Jenkins voicing support for a 'dotCYM' domain name, which she claims would open up Welsh websites to international recognition, reports NewsWales.
She explained: "It would be an excellent tool in promoting Welsh events both to communities in Wales and abroad. It would open up new opportunities for Welsh-based businesses."
Her opinions highlight the importance of choosing the right domain name, a decision which could currently be affecting broadband customers hoping to develop a website.
However, the Guardian recently reported that Thomas Herbert of Hostway has voiced concerns that the new domain name policy could cause increased cyber-squatting, unless companies purchased all alternatives, such as amazon.amazon and amazon.shopping.
