Colchester to achieve 'mobile broadband town' status

Monday 25th July 2011, by Daniel King

The town of Colchester may be the first in the UK to offer its residents high-speed mobile broadband access across the region.

With typical speeds of 6.8Mbps available through wireless connections in the town, Colchester Borough Council has given the green light to an initiative to boost this figure to 11Mbps.

The local authority believes that the move will bring business to the area over the next five years and will place Colchester ahead of other towns and cities in terms of competitive advantage.

It could also benefit systems such as the local police CCTV network.

Nick Barlow, portfolio holder for commerce and sustainability at the council, said: "Providing users with low cost digital access will bring a range of other benefits to Colchester, including helping to create safer communities and reducing the need to travel."

City councillors in Birmingham recently said they are set to consider proposals for mobile broadband improvement, which recommends introducing 4G wireless that would be a major boost for local residents and businesses.
