'Free broadband plan' for North Tyneside

Monday 12th January 2009, by Daniel King

Residents in the north-east of England could soon be provided with a free broadband service in their homes, if a local politician gets his way.

According to the News Guardian, North Tyneside elected mayor John Harrison believes free broadband - which would be provided by the council - could bring a host of benefits to the community.

As part of his vision of a "positive future", Mr Harrison said children could be given access to a wider education if they were granted free internet access.

The plan would also serve to "bring the wider world into North Tyneside homes", enabling both adults and children to experience a better life, he added.

This came as part of a series of proposals laid out by Mr Harrison to improve services in the area to help ensure future prosperity.

"Now is not the time to do nothing - now is the time to plan, to act and to provide the support and leadership that the residents of North Tyneside want and need," he told the newspaper.

The report follows a pledge by Conservative leader David Cameron to introduce measures to ensure universal access to high-speed broadband within ten years, if elected.

Mr Cameron's comments were welcomed by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) last week, with the group claiming that this would help to ensure a competitive UK business environment in the future.

However, the CLA also called for the leader of the opposition to "go further still" by committing to significant government investment in order to make the plans a reality.
