Ofcom investigates hidden broadband charges
(Fri, 28th December 2007)
Telecoms watchdog Ofcom is to investigate charges laid out be mobile phone and broadband companies after an increase in customer complaints over 'hidden' costs, the Times reports.
A consultation document will be released early next year by Ofcom, after various unexpected costs have been looked into.
Chief executive of Ofcom Ed Richards said: "Consumers of communications services see headline prices fall. But they must not be misled. As they make their choice of provider, they need confidence that any additional charges are fair, transparent and justified."
Charges include costs for insurance 'administration' charges and expensive technical helplines, aspects which could be of interest to those thinking of switching their broadband supplier.
Some companies charge more for payments by means other than direct debit, citing extra administration costs.
The review follows a 12-month investigation in 2003 by Ofcom which looked into the range of tariffs available, deemed 'confusing' by some customers.
