Recent research has found that four in ten people in the UK are unaware that their email may be scanned for use in targeted advertising.
The study conducted by free email operator GMX has found that a further 40 per cent did not even know that the practice ever took place, reports ISP Review.
Of those with internet or broadband connections, one-third stated that they would like to be able to choose not to have their private missives scanned.
Just under one in five users said that they were not at all bothered by having their messages used for advertising purposes.
Eva Heil, managing director of GMX, commented: "British consumers should bear in mind that they have a choice of free email services that don't do this.
"If they are uncomfortable with the practice, they should vote with their feet."
In related news, a study conducted by Money Supermarket recently found that one in six people did not suitably protect their wireless router from unauthorised access.
