Broadband banking 'can be safe and convenient'

Broadband users may still harbour some doubts about the safety of online banking, but one expert has this week stated that it is a product people should be taking advantage of.

A spokesman for Prevx, a company which specialises in incremental security solutions for businesses large and small, explained that concern over the safety of internet-based finance still exists.

Jacques Erasmus, director of malware research at the organisation, said it was not uncommon for people to ask his advice on whether or not they should use online banking - to which he always says yes.

The expert noted that in terms of simplicity and convenience, such a facility can be invaluable for those with busy lives, adding that a common sense, step-by-step approach to security would help keep people protected.

Mr Erasmus added: "There is already a considerable amount being done to educate consumers around security, but there's always more that can be done to ensure trust continues to grow."

He recommended investing in anti-malware or anti-virus software and keeping this as up to date as possible to stay ahead of the trends in the field.

"By installing anti-malware products that … detect new, fast emerging threats, you can have greater confidence in online banking," he concluded.

A recent report from Mintel entitled Financial Services: Technology and the Internet revealed that while 70 per cent of adults have some form of web access, 90 per cent of these admitted they use it for some form of banking activity.
