Broadband users warned about current virus threats

A new report has warned broadband users about the number of threats currently on the web and one company has spoken about how important it is for people to protect themselves against these with reliable malware and antivirus technology.

Sunbelt Software, a group which provides such solutions for Windows-based PCs and laptops, listed the top ten most prevalent online items causing problems for surfers last month.

It was noted 4.99 per cent of those who unknowingly installed malware did so via the Trojan-Spy.Win32.Zbot.gen program and 2.92 per cent of those studied fell victim to Trojan.Win32.Tdss.aalc.

The third most downloaded virus was Win32-Trojan-gen (2.23 per cent) and this was followed by Trojan.1 (2.11 per cent), Trojan.DNSChanger.Gen (1.66 per cent), Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec (1.58 per cent), Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen (1.5 per cent), BehavesLike.Win32.Malware (1.49 per cent) Explorer32.Hijacker (1.32 per cent) and Trojan.Fakeavalert (1.2 per cent).

BitDefender also issued its own review of current online threats this week and noted that many were now becoming increasingly professional and some where based on corporate models.

Vlad Valceanu, head of the group's anti-spam research lab said the value of the internet for business, education and leisure had created a channel for people to misuse it - and for this reason it was important for people to protect themselves.

"Cybercriminals are not going to stop looking for ways to enhance their e-threats, which is why it is essential for computer users to make sure they have a security solution in place that can provide them with advanced, proactive protection," he said.
