Broadband users warned on security updates

Wednesday 9th September 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband users were advised of the importance of keeping their web security solutions up-to-date this week by one expert who warned how neglecting to do this can be damaging.

A spokesman for Network Box Limited (NBL), a global organisation that specialises in the implementation of unified threat management technology, said although some people do not worry about their current facilities, this may prove to be a costly mistake.

Simon Heron, internet security analyst at the group, explained not all web users were fully aware of the need to update security software and often if there is no interest in IT, such updates can go unchecked.

However, the expert added that whether the broadband connection is for business or home use, adopting the "it will look after itself, won't it?" attitude will leave people open to the many threats that exist out there.

"When driving a car you used to have to always check the oil, the water, the radiator et cetera. We're at that stage with computers – you've still got to check certain things behind the scenes and we need a bit of education to do that," Mr Heron said.

He went on to say that both Windows and Mac users were coming around to the idea that it was important to keep on top of web security, but warned people that living "on the edge" will only serve people well for a short period of time.

Recent research from PC Tools showed around one-third of UK web users never update their security software.
