Consumers who are considering making online purchases have been advised to pay by credit card as they may be able to claim compensation if they are scammed.

The recommendation comes from the Trading Standards Institute (TSI), which stated that debit card payments are impossible to recover, but that credit card companies may allow customers to claim money back.

Tony Northcott, a representative of the TSI, commented: "At the end of the day the consumer can help themselves."

"If you pay by credit card you'll probably be able to claim it back from your credit card company," he added.

Online ticket scams by touts were cited as one of the major reasons for the warning, as sold out events often lead eager punters to buy from unlicensed vendors, which may leave them out of pocket.

Under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, it is possible for customers to claim losses on transactions between £100 and £30,000.
