Expert comments on online shopping popularity

Tuesday 29th September 2009, by Daniel King

One expert has offered his thoughts on recent figures that highlight the popularity of online shopping with broadband users across the UK.

Earlier this month, the Office for National Statistics published a report that showed the overall volume of web-based retail sales for last month was up by 2.1 per cent on the same period last year.

It was noted that between June and August, numbers were also up by 1.2 per cent on the preceding three months, with both food and non-food purchases witnessing growth.

A spokesman for Kurt Salmon Associates, a firm which provides industry-focused management consulting solutions, explained that this data was indicative of how important the web is to the public at this time - and that this was unlikely to change anytime soon.

Matthew Cushen, a senior manager at the group who has also enjoyed successes as a self-employed businessman, said it was clear that more internet-friendly options were heading to the market that would only enhance the popularity of shopping in this way.

"Online retailing in the UK is clearly going to be more and more important. [One example of this is] Ocado, which is a purely online grocery retailer which offers an increasing breadth of assortment and offers fantastic service which is really a lifestyle enhancement for their customers," he added.

This company also offers a downloadable application for use with the Apple iPhone 3G which has been accessed by over 80,000 users and is now the 15th most popular on the handset manufacturer's App Store.
