Facebook thieves get £30,000

Facebook thieves get £30,000 A boastful businessman has been conned out of £30,000, reports the Daily Record, highlighting the need for security and awareness while using broadband.

The man had talked on the social networking site Facebook about his wealth, including his car and boat, which alerted the thieves to him as a target for internet fraud.

After sending him an email pretending to be from the site, the con artists were able to use his name, date of birth and other details to break into his bank account.

Stephen Trilling, spokesperson for Symantec, commented: "Today's criminal is focused on compromising legitimate websites to launch attacks."

It has been revealed by the Record that government and security firm statistics estimate that 11 million people in Britain put too many personal details on public view online, which could lead to broadband users facing security breaches.

The BBC also recently reported that over 90 per cent of email was spam, according to Spamhaus, which should also be deleted to protect broadband users and their equipment from viruses.
