Firms urged to beware of cyber attacks

Many companies are unaware of the impact a cyber attack can have on their operations, it has been claimed.
Organisations should therefore do their best to allocate resources to keeping their networks secure, urged Martyn Ruks of MWR InfoSecurity.
The technical director of the information security firm insisted that there is a lack of understanding about electronic attacks "across the board".
"A lot of organisations don't understand what impact an electronic attack on their assets are likely to have, whether that is a disruption to revenue streams, [or] their sites not being available through fraud or compliance issues," he added.
Earlier this week, a report from Imperva found that insider threats in organisations come from regular employees.
The study indicated that more than half of staff claim personal ownership of information held by their companies.
More than seven in ten of the 1,000 people surveyed admitted that they have taken out corporate data in the past.
"When we look at this as a trend and an increasing threat, it is very important that people are aware as to what kinds of resources are needed to actually protect against this. It is not simply an issue where we can throw a piece of technology or solution at it, to solve it," Mr Ruks said.
"It is about everyone, from users to consumers to businesses and the government, understanding what these threats are and making sure the right resources are in place to actually protect against this."
