ISPs 'focusing on email security'
Thursday 29th November 2007, by Daniel King
A growing number of internet service providers (ISPs) in Europe are concentrating on improving their email security provisions, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the Inbox Outbox event earlier this week, Pascal Manzano of Enisa cited statistics suggesting that almost all ISPs provide basic inbound, or ingress, email protection, IT Week reports.
Meanwhile, the proportion of companies offering basic security for outbound (egress) emails rose from 45 per cent in 2006 to 90 per cent this year, he stated.
"When egress filtering is provided, it doesn't directly benefit that ISP's customers but the other providers, so we're seeing a trend towards acting for more community benefit," Mr Manzano noted.
The findings come shortly after UK broadband provider PlusNet announced that it had teamed up with security software firm Postini to improve its inbound email filtering services.
All of the ISP's broadband customers will be able to benefit from the new service from the beginning of 2008.
