Microsoft web security offering 'not that significant'

Wednesday 30th September 2009, by Daniel King

A recent announcement that has seen one of the world's largest technology companies move further into the broadband security market has been commented on by one expert.

It was recently announced that the Microsoft Security Essentials suite would be made available as a free download to users of the company's Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

According to a spokesman for Symantec, a group which offers a host of similar solutions, as well as storage and management services, it is an indication that the firm has seen the attention that is given to this part of the market.

Con Mallon, Europe, Middle East and Asia product marketing director for Symantec in the UK, explained, however, that he did not believe the move was as significant for the security industry as some have suggested.

"What they are bringing to the market here is a fairly basic and simplistic anti-virus scanning engine. It's inherently signature based and … therefore a reactively based technology," he said.

Mr Mallon went on to say that comparatively, companies of his own were able to provide next-generation products that were much more competent in dealing with threats.

Microsoft announced the launch of the free anti-malware, spyware and virus software earlier this week and noted users could expect a product built on the same core technology it uses to protect its business clients.

The software is available in 19 countries and comes in eight different languages.
