'No such thing as safe web zone'

'No such thing as safe web zone'

(Fri, 14th December 2007)

Broadband users have been warned that there is no longer such a thing as a "safe" website.

According to Kevin Hogan of internet security organisation Symantec Security Response, users should be wary of the potential threats posed by all kinds of sites when browsing the web.

He added that it is no longer the case that people can refrain from visiting certain types of sites - such as gambling and porn websites - in order to make sure they stay safe on the internet.

"The notion of there being good and bad neighbourhoods on the web is really gone," Mr Hogan commented, adding: "Any potential website could have been hijacked, unbeknown to you and also even the organisation running the website."

According to Websense, one of the major threats in 2008 will be the rise of malware attacks based on major events such as the Olympics.
