Small firms laid-back about IT security

More than half of small businesses in the UK and the US have no IT security policies for their staff, new research has revealed.
A survey from AVG Technologies found that 52 per cent of small firms in these countries do not provide security guidelines to employees.
One in seven of these organisations have no internet security software in place, the report discovered.
In a blog post on the company's website, AVG said: "As our research shows, small businesses have a fundamental understanding that internet security threats can be a hazard to their businesses."
"We know that you are often time poor and lack the resources to adequately protect your businesses from cyber criminals who may try to steal valuable company information," it added.
Further statistics from AVG, which surveyed 2,000 small businesses along with pollsters GfK, revealed that 83 per cent of firms agree IT security is "critical" for their operations.
Although 77 per cent admit that a lack of such solutions could have a negative impact on their business, only 48 per cent have clear policies for staff.
One-quarter of the companies polled have suffered a data breach, the findings revealed.
"We think it is even more important for small businesses to put the right security measures in place, or else risk losing out to competitors when things go wrong," AVG said.
