Social networkers 'targeted by fraudsters'

Social networkers 'targeted by fraudsters'

(Tue, 13th November 2007)

For every four Britons who log on to a social networking site, one could be putting themselves at risk from identify fraudsters, it has been claimed.

Around 2.7 million broadband users who enjoy spending time on the likes of MySpace and Facebook may have left themselves exposed to fraud.

Campaign group Get Safe Online is urging social networkers not to post personal details online as a date of birth and address is all that is needed to set up a false credit card account.

A survey by the campaigners found that one in six users have posted information about other people without permission.

Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, said: "Although some of these details may seem harmless, they actually provide rich pickings for criminals."

According to comScore, Britain is Europe's most eager social networker, with 78 per cent of the UK's broadband users now belonging to one or more social networking sites.
