Virgin Media will not disconnect illegal file sharers

Virgin Media will not disconnect illegal file sharers Virgin Media has announced that it will not disconnect its users who are found to be illegally sharing files.

The company's chief executive officer Neil Berkett told Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference that there was no legal basis for a move of this sort, according to paidContent.

He said that piracy was the individual responsibility of the rights holder but was keen to emphasise that Virgin Media did have an interest in music rights.

The firm has signed a voluntary anti-piracy agreement in which providers will alert users when they have completed an illegal download.

Mr Berkett commented: "There is no regulatory or legal framework for us to say to a customer 'we are turning you off', and therefore we will not."

Virgin Media's fastest internet connection can yield speeds of up to 20Mbps, which the company claims will require just two seconds to download a music track.

This package can be purchased for £10 each month for the first half-year if a Virgin phone line is also signed up for.
