The importance of broadband security has been highlighted in a report showing that the number of computer viruses has now reached one million.
Symantec's Global Internet Security Threat Report has indicated that programs such as viruses, worms and trojans have reached an all time high - which could affect unprotected broadband users.
"Attackers have adopted stealth tactics that prey on end users on individual computers via the world wide web, rather than attempting high-volume broadcast attacks to penetrate networks," according to the research.
Broadband users should be particularly wary of social networking sites, as information given on these sites can be used for identity theft if not properly hidden, it added.
Developed to increased online confidence, Symantec was established in 1982 and now employs over 17,500 people, working to improve internet security for homes and businesses.
