BT buys Madasafish operator

Friday 6th July 2007, by Daniel King

BT has announced an agreement to buy the company behind the Madasafish broadband service.

The telecoms giant will acquire ISP Brightview Group for £15.8 million once the transaction has been approved by its shareholders.

Brightview, which presently has about 62,000 customers, also operates the Global Internet and Waitrose web services, and is also set to launch a new ISP and telephony facility with John Lewis under the brand name Greenbee.

"BT already provides the UK's most popular and best-performing ADSL broadband service. This acquisition will ensure that Brightview's customers can benefit from our market-leading services, resources and technology development," commented BT Retail chief executive Ian Livingston.

Brightview was founded in 2001 and launched a new parental control feature, which is available as a free trial and as a full paid-for service, for its Madasafish service earlier this year.

It said that it had decided to sell up due to ongoing consolidation in the UK broadband sector.
