Govt calls on broadband providers to work together
Thursday 15th July 2010, by Daniel King
UK culture secretary Jeremy Hunt is set to call on the country's broadband providers to work together to provide super-fast internet to every household in Britain.
The secretary is expected to call on the likes of BT, O2, Orange, TalkTalk and BE Broadband to combine their efforts in order for the government's internet vision to become a reality.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Hunt commented: "Our broadband network is as fundamental to Britain's success in the digital era as the railway network was in the industrial age.
"By the end of this Parliament, this country should boast the best super-fast broadband in Europe and be up there with the very best in the world."
He also vowed to get the industry's "key players" to collaborate in order to deliver the government's broadband expectations.
"I now need them to work together on solutions and tell us what we can do to help make this ambition a reality," he added.
The comments follow the launch of the Race Online 2012 campaign, which aims to get as many people as possible online by the end of London's Olympic year.
Martha Lane Fox, the government's digital champion, announced the campaign as part of a bid to get ten million people in the UK, who have never accessed the internet before, online by 2015.
Mr Hunt added: "Before we embark on legislation or start committing scarce public resources, we need to explore cost-effective ways of achieving our aims so I want to hear from companies about their proposals and willingness to work towards mutually beneficial commercial arrangements."
