Mobile broadband 'boosting flexible working'

Tuesday 26th May 2009, by Daniel King

More businesses across the UK are taking advantage of the many benefits to be enjoyed by offering access to more flexible working technologies, according to a new study.

Commissioned by Orange, the independent research asked 500 businesses and around 4,500 staff members how they were implementing facilities such as mobile broadband and telecommunications into their daily lives.

It was noted there has been a "a huge shift" in how British firms are now doing business - with more than ever providing staff access to services that allow them to work from anywhere.

The study was aimed at seeing which UK region is the "most flexible" and revealed 63 per cent of firms are now embracing related practices.

Wales came out on top of the study, with 29 per cent of employees having the ability to work outside the office, compared to the south of England - which scored 25 per cent.

Scotland was found to have 22 per cent of its workforce able to work more flexibly and the lowest rate was found to be the East Midlands (16 per cent).

Orange UK's vice-president of business Paul Tollet commented: "It's great that over half the UK working population is able to take advantage of flexible working. But the fact that over 35% of employers have yet to consider it is surprising, particularly when the benefits are well acknowledged."

For those who need to travel as part of their business, mobile broadband could provide a more valuable solution than a fixed-line connection.
