Orange rapped over broadband ad claims

Monday 21st July 2008, by Daniel King

A new promotional campaign for Orange's broadband service has landed the provider in trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

The regulator decided that, in a recent newspaper advert, Orange misled consumers by comparing its Home Max service to BT's broadband offerings and claiming that it was possible to "save over £190 when you switch from BT".

According to the ASA, Orange's calculation failed to consider a number of additional features included in the BT service, such as free Wi-Fi minutes, Norton AntiVirus software and a free cordless phone.

The body concluded that there were "significant differences between the services" that were "likely to influence consumers' evaluation of the comparison" if included in the advert.

As a result, Orange has been ordered to amend the advert and highlight these differences.

Virgin Media was recently told to alter one of its broadband adverts by the ASA after BT argued that its sample download speeds could be slower than advertised due to the provider's usage caps.
