Orange trials new 20Mbps broadband

A group of Orange customers have been offered the chance to trial a new 20Mbps fixed-line broadband service that could eventually be rolled out across the entire network.
The move, which follows a string of recent improvements to the company's fixed-line connection, will see existing customers participating in the tests "re-graded" into faster profiles.
These users will receive download speeds of up to 20Mbps for the same price as their current up to 8Mbps service and will receive guidance and support from technical teams.
Commenting on the announcement, director of broadband and home at Orange Asif Aziz said the tests represent a significant step forward for the provider.
"This trial is an important step in enabling us to offer up to 20Mbps home broadband to consumers across our network," he stated.
"It is also testament to our ongoing commitment to evolve our fixed broadband service and ensure we offer customers a truly reliable user experience."
The move is designed to monitor the reliability and performance of the higher-speed service before it is made available to the entire Orange customer base.
It comes as part of a commitment by the firm's chief executive officer Tom Alexander to improve its fixed broadband packages and help meet the needs of today's consumers.
Last month, Orange also added to its mobile broadband portfolio after striking a deal with computer manufacturer Hewlett Packard to distribute a range of notebooks and laptops with ready-to-use internet access.
The machines come loaded with Orange's Internet Everywhere mobile broadband service and dongle, as well as a 3GB data allowance.
