Orange unveils 8mbps packages

Tuesday 30th September 2008, by Daniel King

Orange has announced that it has completed work to upgrade its home broadband network so that customers receive download speeds of up to 8mbps as standard.

To mark the change, the company has unveiled a new range of low-cost broadband packages.

New Orange mobile pay monthly customers will be offered the chance to sign up for free 8mbps fixed broadband.

The service comes as part of a packaged deal, which also includes Orange's home phone service, complete with free evening and weekend calls to landlines in the UK.

Contracts last 18 months and there is no connection fee.

Orange mobile pay monthly customers who want unlimited downloads can upgrade to the Home Select or Home Max service at a discounted rate.

The operator is also offering an incentive to those only looking for a broadband deal, by offering a free Livebox wireless router with its Home Select and Home Max price plans.

It claims the set-up will allow users to make free phone calls to landlines in 30 countries, including the UK, and Orange mobiles at any time.

Orange UK's vice president of consumer Mike Newnham said the company is able to offer the new higher-speed service, which it also anticipates being more reliable than its predecessor, because it had invested heavily in infrastructure.

"We have spent the past 12 months working hard on fixing the basics," explained Mr Newnham.

"As a result we've seen huge improvements in the quality of our broadband network and the service we offer, and our customers are already providing us with some extremely positive feedback."

Orange recently announced details of a free laptop deal available to small businesses which sign up to a mobile broadband contract.
