Virgin Media 'eases traffic management scheme'

Virgin Media has relaxed its traffic management policy for select broadband customers.
From now on, L and XL subscribers will be able download more between 10am and 9pm before the provider cuts their download speed, while XXL users - who have access to a 50Mbps line - have no traffic management restrictions.
Jon James, Virgin Media Broadband executive director, said the changes highlight how the major investment in its new DOCSIS 3.0 network is enabling all customers to enjoy the best of today's internet offerings, "whether viewing full screen HD video on a PC or unlimited downloads".
Meanwhile, the organisation recently revealed a pilot to test the real-world deployment of 200Mb speeds. This is four times faster than the 50Mb service currently available to XXL users.
Virgin Media believes this is the fastest implementation of DOCSIS3 technology in the world - and is quicker than the 160Mb and 101Mb services currently offered in Japan and the US respectively.
"The Virgin Media pilot will also ensure that the UK stays right at the forefront of the digital revolution as it unfolds globally," the firm said.
It added: "The pilot will be running for at least six months before results are analysed to understand potential consumer usage and to assess the commercial viability of such ultrafast services."
In January, the company unveiled its long-awaited 50Mb advertising campaign to promote the UKs first ultrafast broadband service, starring Samuel L Jackson.
At the time, Virgin Media hoped to roll out its 50Mb broadband service to over 12 million UK homes by the summer.
