Swamped Pipex reports difficulties

Thursday 28th June 2007, by Daniel King

Broadband firm Pipex has reported some major difficulties following severe flooding in the north of England, it has been claimed.

The Register reports that Pipex's data centres in both Manchester and Leeds have been affected by flooding near Sheffield which resulted in a fibre break.

Staff working at the broadband firm's office, which is based in Sheffield, were unable to get into work, while the company's community site fell victim to a power outage, the website states.

A spokeswoman is cited as saying: "Some customers may be experiencing extended latency between the north and south of England."

However, she added that normal service should now be resumed as latency issues only occurred for about 90 minutes.

In related news, Italian firm Tiscali is believed to be in talks about the acquisition of Pipex's broadband base after announcing last month that preliminary discussions were taking place.
