Broadband clarity 'required by consumers'

Monday 7th September 2009, by Daniel King

Consumers may still be suffering from some confusion about the various broadband packages that are available to them from internet service providers (ISPs) that say downloads are unlimited, it has been advised.

A spokesman for UK Web Media, a group that specialises in the field of affiliate and pay per click marketing, agreed that although some companies are improving the clarity of their statements, more could be done.

Thomas Newton, lead content writer for the group, said greater levels of transparency over broadband usage were being introduced by the likes of O2, who state maximum expected speeds can be around 20 Mbps - despite the fact their ADSL2+ technology is capable of more.

He added this type of honesty in advertising was closer to what people can expect from an ISP and it was likely other firms would follow suit in an attempt to be clearer with users.

"It is confusing when ISPs advertise their services as unlimited when they are anything but, even more so when a company like Sky offers a broadband service which is truly unlimited," Mr Newton went on to say, concluding by saying that although Virgin Media's packages were advertised in a similar way, this was only relevant at off-peak times.

"Such policies vary from provider to provider, which makes things incredibly confusing [for] customers trying to decide which … to go for."

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show 18.3 million households in the UK now have internet access - around 70 per cent of the nation.
