Broadband shoppers could opt for 3D TV

Broadband customers in the UK looking to switch their service provider may be influenced by a recent announcement from Sky.

The company said this week in addition to its telephone and internet facilities, it will be enhancing its television packages by moving into 3D technology - with an offering set to arrive in homes next year.

It was noted the success of Sky+HD in Britain had seen record growth - and as such, it would make the most of its position as the only company with the technical capacity to offer 3D broadcasting by taking what it explained was clearly "the next step" for its television products.

The group advised it had more than doubled its high definition subscribers in the last year and was hoping take up of the new facilities would be equally popular.

Brian Sullivan, managing director of Sky's Customer Group, said as over a million homes had already "future-proofed themselves" by installing the +HD set-top box, it was natural for the company to look at how this "amazing picture and sound" can be made even better.

He added: "3D is a [genuine] seeing is believing experience - making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers."

The technology is now becoming a staple of cinematic releases, with one of the most eagerly-anticipated 3D movies of 2009 - James Cameron's Avatar - heading to theatres across the world in December.
