BSkyB has vowed to continue building on its success after revealing an increase in the total number of subscribers to its broadband service.

The firm released its half-year results this week, announcing that its total number of customers had risen from 1.792 million in September to 1.955 million in December 2008.

This makes its the UK's fastest-growing broadband provider, with the addition of 163,000 customers over the second quarter of the year.

BSkyB also claimed that its good cost control had allowed it to increase its operating profit, announcing that it would be taking on a further 1,000 employees to help continue its growth in broadband and telephony.

Chief executive Jeremy Darroch said the provider had defied the "very challenging" economic environment by concentrating on the quality and value of its service for broadband users.

"Overall customer growth is up year-on-year and we are selling more products across the board," he revealed.

"We will continue to build our broadband and home telephony businesses, helping even more Sky customers to save money on their household bills," Mr Darroch added.

BSkyB currently offers a range of broadband packages, with all services coming with a free wireless router and McAfee internet security suite worth around £50 each.

Its Base service allows users to access speeds of up to 2Mbps with a download capacity of 2GB a month, making it ideal for browsing and emailing.

Consumers looking for a faster connection can sign up to Sky Max, which enables them to take advantage of speeds up to 16Mbps and offers unlimited downloads each month.
