Sky broadband 'proving increasingly popular'

Sky broadband 'proving increasingly popular'

By Brian Palmer (Fri, 29th January 2010)

Sky has reported "strong financial progress" in its broadband sector after more than 100,000 people signed up for the service in the final quarter of 2009.

Subscription to services, including broadband internet and telephony, were up by 36 per cent during the period, despite the ongoing credit crunch.

The television, phone and broadband provider stated its belief that the strong performance is down to the "exceptional value" and pricing structure it adopts.

More than one-in-four Sky customers now use the company's super-fast broadband internet connection, while 18 per cent sign up to television, phone and broadband services as one package.

"This performance reflects continued customer growth in all of our home communication products and the benefits of removing standalone free broadband nine months ago," Sky said.

The company was forced to increase its output costs to £246 million in order to fulfill the needs of its 2.4 million broadband internet subscribers.

Sky recently launched a news service for its mobile broadband customers, which enables those with an Apple iPhone to access the latest stories and pictures from around the world in any of six categories.

The Sky News app is said to have racked up total downloads of more than one million since it was launched last year.

It aims to deliver a tailored experience to each of its users, with up-to-the-minute reports on news, entertainment, politics and sport.

David Gibbs, Sky's general manager for mobile, said: "In less than a year we've already seen millions of downloads of Sky's various iPhone apps."
