Sky Go is introduced
Wednesday 13th July 2011, by Daniel King
Sky has launched its new Sky Go service, which enables customers to watch channels on their laptops, PCs and Macs through their broadband deals.
The service encompasses a number of channels within one package, allowing all ten million of Sky's TV customers to catch programmes when they are away from their televisions.
By the time the new football season arrives next month, iPhone, iPad and iPad Touch systems will also be compatible with Sky Go, meaning that there will be several ways to ensure that broadcasts will not be missed.
Among the channels included in the package for iPhone users are Sky Sports, ESPN and Sky News, while laptop and computer users will be able to access over 30 channels, ranging from Sky Movies to Sky Atlantic.
The service will be available from August to non-Sky TV customers and monthly subscriptions are priced from £15 to £40.
In the future, Sky Go will also be supported by The Cloud, a public WiFi network that enables wireless access in more than 4,500 public locations. More elaborate information regarding the service will be revealed in due course.
Andrea Zappia, managing director of Sky's Customer Group, said: "We’re committed to keep innovating so that our customers enjoy the best possible entertainment experience.
"Sky Go is just the latest example of how we're giving people a better choice of programmes combined with better ways to watch."
As well as this, Sky has decided to freeze its subscription prices for all of its ten million customers for a minimum of 12 months.
In order to help boost broadband access in rural communities, the Cambridge TV White Spaces Consortium has been founded.
BskyB, BT, Cambridge Consultants, Microsoft, Nokia and Samsung are among the companies that have committed to the project.
It aims to collate evidence that white spaces can be used to boost internet connectivity without impacting traditional broadcast television in the UK.
