Sky launches news service for mobile broadband users
Monday 18th January 2010, by Daniel King
Broadband internet provider Sky has launched a news service for people with access to the web on a mobile handset.
The Sky News application for the Apple iPhone has racked up downloads of more than a million, it was revealed last week, which led to Sky launching the mobile site.
Those with smartphones - such as the iPhone, BlackBerry and Nexus One - can now access the firm's mobile internet news service from their device.
Users who register will be automatically directed to the Sky News website, which is available for free and features the latest stories alongside thumbnail images.
It will also be possible to choose from text-based news or images only and even videos.
David Gibbs, Sky's general manager for mobile, said: "In less than a year we've already seen millions of downloads of Sky's various iPhone apps and the Sky News has been an important factor in this."
Sky News for the iPhone was launched in May 2009 and delivers news to the text message inboxes of users, who can choose to hear news on any of the six different categories on offer.
Mr Gibbs added that the launch of the Sky News application for mobiles would give customers a "tailored experience" which may help to increase the number of mobile broadband customers.
Smartphones, such as the iPhone, were last week said to be behind a surge in demand for mobile broadband which has created a "renaissance" in the sector, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
