Sky set to launch fibre broadband

Wednesday 1st February 2012, by Harry Wallis

Sky will launch a fibre broadband product from April, which will offer download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Entitled Sky Broadband Unlimited Fibre, the service will be charged at £20 a month with no usage caps. From its introduction, the connection will be available to roughly 30 per cent of British homes, with coverage increasing alongside BT's roll-out of fibre technology.

This new offering comes as part of a number of new changes to Sky's internet services, with the broadband provider aiming to expand its network footprint to cover 88 per cent of Britain by June 2013, giving more than one million additional homes access to its network.

The launch of Sky's public Wi-Fi service is also approaching, providing Sky Broadband Unlimited customers with free access to over 10,000 hotspots throughout Britain.

Locations offering this service include Caffe Nero, Pizza Express and Wagamama, meaning that subscribers can benefit from the company's services while on the move.

Sky also recorded significant growth in the final quarter of 2011, selling more than half a million home communications products and increasing its market share to 17 per cent, representing 3.6 million customers.

Stephen van Rooyen, managing director of Sky’s sales and marketing group, said: "This year sees a number of enhancements that will ensure we create even more choice.

"Whether it's the launch of free public Wi-Fi, extending our network into more parts of the UK, or adding fibre to our product mix, we are focused on meeting the demands of customers and on being their number one choice for home communications."

Despite Sky's latest enhancements, it still faces strong competition in the broadband market, especially as Virgin Media is set to double the speed of its broadband for four million of its customers.

This will see the provider's top speed leap from 100Mbps to 120Mbps.
