Sky's broadband customers double
Sky broadband customers more than doubled its customer based last year, with 457,000 people across the country signing up to the service.
By April 29th, this figure rose even further to 553,000, with gross bookings standing at 669,000. This puts the company on course for its target of 700,000 broadband customers by the end of June.
James Murdoch, chief executive of Sky, said: "Our investments in customer service, value and quality are driving more customers to choose more services from Sky than ever before.
"Changes to our retention and acquisition strategy are delivering valuable benefits to the quality and profitability of our business.
"We are delivering on our multi-product strategy and customers are responding in record numbers."
However, it was not such good news for the company's TV service. Its 'churn rate', defined as the proportion of customers who cancel their contracts, increased to 13.7 per cent in the three months to the end of March compared to 11.9 per cent in the previous quarter.
This is considerably above its long-term target of ten per cent and has had a knock-on effect on the company's profits.
BSkyB's adjusted operating profits dropped to £557 million last year from £660 million 12 months earlier, but the firm claimed this was primarily due to a £137 million investment in its broadband business.
