Broadband switching difficulties 'more than halve'

Tuesday 30th October 2007, by Daniel King

Complaints to telecoms watchdog Ofcom about difficulties switching broadband providers have more than halved this year, according to reports.

While Ofcom receives an average of 180 complaints a week from customers finding is difficult to switch providers, this is down from 500 per week last year, thisismoney.co.uk reports.

Since February this year, Ofcom ruled that all broadband providers should give customers the Mac serial number - needed to start the connection - within five working days. However, some customers are still waiting in excess of two weeks to set up their broadband connections.

Ofcom spokesman Simon Bates told the news provider: "Last year, we realised switching broadband providers was a big problem across the industry so we moved to address the issue."

According to Ofcom, in April this year, 53 per cent of UK households had a broadband connection.
