Broadband users advised on bundles

Tuesday 15th September 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband users could be getting a much better deal if they considered the various bundled broadband, TV and telephone packages that are available to them, it has been advised.

This week, Ofcom announced it had removed one of the final pieces of regulation that affected the fixed-line telephone market and this could further enhance shoppers' ability to save.

It was noted the decision meant that BT would have equal power in the market with rivals including Virgin Media, Sky and TalkTalk - and could no longer hold on to certain services in the UK.

The telecommunications and broadcasting watchdog added that by doing this, not only would levels of competition increase in the market, but so would the number of bundled options available to the public.

Ofcom also took the opportunity to outline some of the things people considering switching to such a package should keep in mind before changing providers.

"Bundles have many attractions, but before taking out a contact consumers should consider a few points," it noted, adding "how closely it matches your requirements" is the first of these.

"For example, if one element is broadband, does the deal provide quick enough internet speed and is the download limit large enough?"

The length of the contract may also be something to consider as for some - such as those in rental properties - a shorter period is more realistic.

Recent figures from the organisation showed that during 2008, 46 per cent of people in the UK who opted for communications services did so with a bundle of two or more products.
