Broadband users 'getting savvier on bundled packages'

Thursday 6th August 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband users in the UK are not afraid to get online and make sure they have the best deal on their internet, TV and telephone packages, a new report has suggested.

The Ofcom Communications Market Report looked at the way people view their home telecoms and entertainment packages and showed that in general households were likely to find a deal that best suits their needs.

According to the study, the first quarter of the year saw 46 per cent of British consumers bundling at least two services from a single operator - which compared to the 39 per cent recorded in the same period in 2009.

This was in line with growth in the amount of time people were spending online, which was shown to have increased from nine minutes per day on average in May 1994 to 25 minutes.

More people were also found to be considering switching providers as a result of there being better combined deals available elsewhere, with 47 per cent of respondents admitting they would now seriously think about doing so in comparison to 12 months ago.

Peter Phillips, Ofcom partner for strategy and market developments said it was clear that people were now much savvier about the way in which they are billed for television, internet and telephone packages.

"Almost half of us economise by taking a bundle of communications services from a single supplier, while one fifth opt for cheaper mobile contracts which don't include an expensive new phone," he added.

Jerry Troyer said this week in an article for the Examiner that there are considerable financial rewards to be had for those prepared to shop around for the best deal.
