Ofcom: People not willing to give up broadband

Thursday 6th August 2009, by Daniel King

A new survey has shown that despite concerns over the current state of the economy, consumers are not prepared to give up access to their mobile phone and broadband services.

Put together by telecommunications industry watchdog Ofcom, the research looked at how people were using the latest products and offers to get the best deal on web connections and voice calling, revealing it was often more important than eating out or home improvements.

The Communications Market Report, which is the sixth of its kind so far, asked respondents what type of things the pressure of the credit crunch was likely to force them to do without - and 47 per cent admitted this would be visits to restaurants.

Other luxuries that featured high on people's lists of items they would give up if absolutely necessary were DIY projects - the choice of 41 per cent - with holidays attaining the same figure.

Comparatively, 19 per cent of the people who took part in the research said their mobile phone service was something they would think about revising if pushed, followed by TV subscriptions (16 per cent) and finally their home broadband connection (10 per cent).

In addition, the survey considered the number of people who were taking advantage of bundled packages that included internet, telephone and television products and found people were flocking to things like Sky+, BT Vision and Virgin Media's V+.

Peter Phillips, Ofcom Partner, Strategy & Market Developments said: "As well as getting better deals we are demanding more control. Over 25 per cent of households now use a digital TV recorder to watch programmes at a time that suits us and 23 per cent use online catch up services like the BBC iPlayer."

An article for the Examiner this week said consumers looking to save cash should consider reviewing their bundled home entertainment and telecommunications packages.
