Ofcom publishes student broadband guide

A new guide has been published this week that aims to help students decide on which broadband package will be best suited to their needs during their time in higher education.

Put together by telecommunications and broadcasting watchdog Ofcom, the document is designed for ensuring young people get a good deal from their provider and suggests asking some questions ahead of making a final decision.

One such consideration is whether or not to choose a fixed or mobile broadband option, as an inclusive landline may not be required and may in fact cause further issues when it comes to paying the bill in a shared property.

However, it adds a wired connection is often the faster and more reliable choice, as well as offering "more generous download limits if you intend to
use broadband for more than just internet browsing and emails".

When this decision has been made, it recommends checking the property in which you are staying for a phone socket and contacting a communications provider to test the line is working or if it needs to be reconnected.

"There are lots of things to consider when moving away from home for the first time," it advised. "But have you thought about how you're going to stay in touch with friends and family or how you're going to email that essay when you're on [a] deadline?"

Last month, Ofcom announced that there are now over 6 million unbundled broadband lines in the UK, meaning shoppers have more choice when it comes to choosing a wired web connection.
