Sky HD boxes "take off" as numbers reach 1m

The popularity of high-definition (HD) has begun to "take off", according to Stephen van Rooyen director of product management at Sky, which has celebrated the purchase of the one millionth Sky+HD box.
Some five million homes now watch TV via a Sky+ box but the broadcasting company announced today that the number of HD packages has reached a million.
Since its launch in May 2006, people have been discovering the difference in sound and visual quality it provides, said Mr van Rooyen.
"Whether you're a fan of Hollywood movies, Test cricket, dramatic documentaries or operatic arias, you can enjoy more of the things you love in stunning high definition with Sky," he explained.
The company includes various packages combining land line, broadband and television allowances in its product line-up. Those considering a HD box might want to see what is on offer and switch broadband providers if they can get a better deal.
Sky started providing broadband to homes in August 2006 and about 15 per cent of its customers choose a combination of TV, phone and internet usage.
Currently, the broadcaster services around 9.318 million people, with 1.769 million benefiting from Multiroom, which enables them to have different Sky boxes in different rooms.
Sky Broadband customers number 2.085 million and consumers using Sky Talk total 1.695 million.
Prices start from £16.50 per month.
