Virgin Media announces Disney content deal

Subscribers to Virgin Media's combined broadband, phone and television packages can expect a whole new selection of content to be made available soon, thanks to a deal the company announced this week.

It has emerged the internet and telecommunications provider has entered into a partnership with Disney that will see a host of entertainment options for kids featured on the V+ set-top box.

The recently-launched Disney XD channel - which is targeted at boys between the ages of six and 14 but also claims to be "girl-inclusive" - will form part of the offering, as will a number of other things that may encourage some consumers with families to consider switching providers.

High definition programming and TV-on-demand content will be made available to subscribers and the option to extend these facilities to online and mobile platforms has also been cited.

Other options that form part of the current packages on V+ include the Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney, bringing popular shows like Hannah Montana, Phineas and Ferb and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse to the screen.

Katharine Burns, executive director of content acquisition at Virgin Media, said the move reflects a commitment to providing the best content and the most innovative ways of delivering it.

"As the home of family entertainment, we're uniquely positioned to give our customers the greatest range of flexibility and choice in their TV viewing … we think kids and families alike are going to love the freedom this Disney deal will bring," she added.

It was recently revealed that Disney had acquired Marvel Comics as part of a move that may see popular characters like Iron Man, Spider Man and Captain America become a more permanent fixture of its TV channels and theme parks.
