Carphone warns of muted broadband take-up

Thursday 31st July 2008, by Daniel King

Carphone Warehouse has warned that revenues from its Talk Talk broadband services are likely to be muted this year.

In a trading statement, the company expects to add between 200,000 and 250,000 customers in the 12 months to March 2009.

In April, Carphone predicted it would boost its order book by 400,000. The company already has 2.8 million broadband customers.

A slowdown in consumer spending and the fact that fewer people can afford to move house have been blamed.

Chief executive Charles Dunstone said that existing customers would benefit from the news.

He explained: "One of the benefits of the current environment is that churn is low and falling, making our relationship with customers increasingly valuable."

According to a recent Carphone survey, 87 per cent of parents say they are fully aware of what their children are doing online.
