TalkTalk announces new broadband security service
Tuesday 10th May 2011, by Daniel King
Broadband provider TalkTalk has launched a new internet security service for computer users.
Entitled HomeSafe, the filter is free for the company's customers and provides three forms of protection and control to help ensure both adults and children can browse online safely.
Firstly, the service detects infected websites and blocks them with a Virus Alerts tool, while the KidsSafe protection program enables internet subscribers to block sites of an offensive nature. These include violence, pornography or gambling.
Additionally, Homework Time gives parents the opportunity temporarily to block social networking sites, such as Facebook, as they could be used to distract children from their studies.
While HomeSafe does provide numerous benefits to internet users, TalkTalk has underlined that it should not be perceived as a substitute for conventional internet security software.
The service also operates across a network rather than on individual computers, meaning that customers can guarantee that they are equipped with the latest updates and security patches.
Tristia Clarke, commercial director of TalkTalk, said: "Of course, it's not a silver bullet and it doesn't absolve parents from the responsibility of knowing what their children are up to online.
"But our research shows parents understand this. They don't want their ISP to control what content they can or can't access online – they just want their internet service provider to give them the power to implement settings that are right for their family."
TalkTalk is also the UK's first internet service provider to operate a network-level security service.
Internet security is now more important than ever, and a spokesman from Kaspersky Lab has said that hackers are now becoming more shrewd in how they steal personal data.
Nikolay Grebennikov, chief technology officer at the company, advised that parents should educate their children over how to stay safe online and avoid threats such as malware.
