TalkTalk: Christmas lights could affect wireless broadband
Monday 21st December 2009, by Daniel King
Christmas decorations could have a negative impact on broadband connectivity over the festive period, TalkTalk has noted.
In a post on the company's official blog, Sylvain Thevenot, senior director of products and alliances at the firm, said that, based on past experience, festive lighting and wiring can cause a major slowdown in speeds - regardless of the ISP.
He explained that last year, the company received a number of calls from customers who were having problems with the speed at which they were able to connect to the internet.
Mr Thevenot stated TalkTalk thinks that this issue could affect "thousands" of people over the festive period.
While the majority of people think that the speed at which they can access broadband is only affected by their distance from the telephone exchange, this is not the case and many other factors can have an impact on their connection speed.
"Although it might sound silly, interference from domestic lighting and wiring is a major problem across the industry and - at this time of year - Christmas lights tend to aggravate it," Mr Thevenot added.
He concluded by advising consumers to keep festive lights as far away from a broadband router as possible and only purchase such decorations from a reputable company that has the CE mark and also not keeping lights flashing on and off as this can have an impact on connectivity.
In a post on the same blog by communications director Mark Schmid earlier this month, it was noted that TalkTalk is now offering people the chance to be sponsored by the company if they are willing to incorporate the company's name into the name of their home.
One family in Croydon now live in TalkTalk Towers.
