TalkTalk holding out for a Digital Hero

Tuesday 28th July 2009, by Daniel King

TalkTalk has launched a campaign to find people across the UK who are using the power of broadband services to do good in the world, either for charities, communities or individuals.

Announced this week, the scheme will search the nation looking for worthwhile recipients of the upcoming Digital Heroes Awards and the company behind it has asked for potential candidates to come forward.

The event, which is organised in conjunction with Citizens Online, will honour 12 people from across individual regions of Britain for their services to the digital technology industry by way of interaction with others.

It is noted these people often do "outstanding work" using broadband internet services and other facilities in bringing communities together and making a real difference to local social circles.

Wendy Becker, managing director of TalkTalk, said the Digital Heroes Awards represent a good way of rewarding some of the hard work some people do that may otherwise go unnoticed.

She added previous winners have said the prize money on offer can enhance regional projects even more, making a greater difference to the various plans and initiatives they are involved with.

John Fisher, chief executive of Citizens Online, added: "Many people can find the internet daunting, but by developing exciting and innovative ways for people to use digital technologies, community organisations can encourage new users."

In addition, Charles Dunstone, TalkTalk's chief executive officer, made an appeal on the company's blog this week, asking for nominations and detailing some of the cash rewards on offer.
