TalkTalk confirms Tiscali acquisition

Monday 11th May 2009, by Daniel King

TalkTalk has confirmed that it is to acquire Tiscali - making the two merged broadband internet companies the largest single provider of web services in the UK.

It was announced by the former company on Friday that it had safeguarded the purchase of the latter. Details were also revealed regarding the financial elements of the transaction.

Thought to be worth around £236 million, TalkTalk's buyout of Tiscali will boost its number of British customers to over 4.25 million - which amounts to around 25 per cent of the nation's homes.

Charles Dunstone, a spokesman for Talk Talk, said emerging as the biggest residential broadband provider in Britain was something no-one could have imagined six years ago, but added the proposed merger would be a good thing for existing and new clients.

He explained value, innovation, customer service and faster download speeds would be among the things the amalgamated provider would now focus its attention on.

"The most important message for Tiscali customers is that their service will continue and improve," Mr Dunstone added. "We will make sure you continue to receive the home phone and broadband services you rely on."

It is hoped the move will put an end to any uncertainty current Tiscali users may have had about their internet connection - and Talk Talk has also advised they can expect "uninterrupted service" during the transition.

Earlier this month, Tiscali highlighted the savings consumers could make if they considered switching from BT to its own broadband internet offerings.
