TalkTalk spokesman comments on Ofcom research

Monday 15th June 2009, by Daniel King

A spokesman for TalkTalk has commented on a recent study conducted by Ofcom, which looked at the number of people in the UK who are currently without broadband services.

The research showed around one in five of Brits who do not have an existing internet connection were likely to sign up for one over the next six months.

In addition, it revealed the current figure these people represented was about 30 per cent of the nation's homes.

TalkTalk's communications director Mark Schmid has since looked at another part of the survey - which identified the type of people that have so far not opted to get online - as part of a recent entry in the company's official blog.

He explains by dividing people into groups - those who have no interest in the web or do not think they need it and those who cannot afford it - a number of questions are raised.

"Will the number of self-excluded people decline over time as broadband becomes ever more central to our jobs and home life? Or do we need to do more […] to ensure everyone can get online, regardless of income?" Mr Schmid asked.

He added that TalkTalk was a great supporter of initiatives like Get Online Day - an event which is run by UK Online - and has continued to make its own services as low-cost as possible to encourage new users to sign up.

The network recently offered free connection to its services for free in the week ending June 13th - offering a saving of £29.99 to new subscribers.
