TalkTalk 'will ride out recession and saturated market'

Tuesday 12th May 2009, by Daniel King

This year will continue to be difficult for internet service providers and businesses, but TalkTalk is well positioned to ride it out, it has been suggested.

According to a spokesman for the broadband and telecommunications company, there are a number of concerns industry commentators currently have about the state of the sector, but there are also some positive things to consider.

In an article for the TalkTalk blog, Adam Wright says the communications industry could be seen as approaching a level of saturation, following the success of a number of companies over the past few years.

However, despite this - and the ongoing effects of the global recession - Mr Wright says his own firm has a well-established client base and customer retention rates that are "some of the best in the business" - leaving it well equipped to ride out the financial storm.

I spend a lot of time monitoring our competitors' products and performance - and can see they all face big challenges in 2009," he explained, adding that TalkTalk would endeavour to offer the best available services to its users "as a saturated market is a more competitive market".

Mr Wright also cited recent research from Point Topic that showed broadband subscriptions in the UK were up by 17.4 million in 2008, but suggested this year may be less of an easy ride.

TalkTalk recently confirmed it had made a bid to acquire Tiscali in a move that could make it the largest home broadband provider in the UK.
